Glutinous rice is divided into two types: indica glutinous rice (long-grain) and japonica glutinous rice (round or oval-grain). In southern China it is commonly called nuomi (glutinous rice), while in northern China it is often referred to as jiangmi.

Glutinous rice is the main ingredient used to make many sticky and chewy delicacies, such as zongzi (rice dumplings), eight-treasure porridge, nian gao (rice cakes), and various desserts. It is also a key ingredient in brewing sweet rice wine and the yellow rice wines popular in southern China. Glutinous rice contains protein, fat, carbohydrates, calcium, phosphorus, iron, and vitamins B1 and B2.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, glutinous rice is warm in nature and sweet in flavor. It is believed to benefit the lungs and spleen, help nourish the body and blood, strengthen the spleen, and warm the stomach, making it a mild and nourishing food.
